A Gravitational Potential energy store
Study the image to the left - it shows a dam and reservoir which is used to generate electricity cleanly.
In this case gravitational potential energy is converted to kinetic energy in water in the pipes - which then turns the turbines connected to electrical generators which convert the kinetic energy to electrical energy.
Electricity can be produced in many different ways. Can you name the energy store which is being used in each of the above generation methods?

Kinetic
The energy an object has because it is moving
Gravitational potential
Energy and object has due to its positon above the ground. An object gains gravitational potential energy when it is raised and loses it when it falls.
Elastic potential
Energy stored in a stretched of compressed spring or elastic band.
Chemical
Energy found in food, fuels or batteries. This energy is transferred during chemical reactions.
Magnetic
Energy due to the force of attraction or repulsion between two magnets.
Electrostatic
Energy due to the force of attraction or repulsion between two charges.
Nuclear
Energy contained within the nucleus of an atom.

Feeling the pressure?
This simulation can be used to investigate the relationship between the pressure, temperature and volume of a gas.
Use the simulation to help answer the following questions:
1. If you keep the volume constant . How does the pressure change when you change the temperature. In your answer describe what happens to the motion of the particles.
2. What can you say about the pressure created if you select the small volume an the maximum temperature.
3. What settings give the lowest pressure? Explain in terms of the motion of the particles.
