ENERGY CHANGES

A Gravitational Potential energy store

Study the image to the left - it shows a dam and reservoir which is used to generate electricity cleanly.

In this case gravitational potential energy is converted to kinetic energy in water in the pipes - which then turns the turbines connected to electrical generators which convert the kinetic energy to electrical energy.

Electricity can be produced in many different ways. Can you name the energy store which is being used in each of the above generation methods?

Magnetic

Energy due to the force of attraction or repulsion between two magnets.

 Three States

Describe the arrangement and motion of the particles in each of the three states of matter shown here

fixed pattern, strong forces of attraction, vibrate, keeps its own shape

particles touch, weak intermolecular forces, can take the shape of their container

particles can move freely, very weak intermolecular forces, move randomly, expand to fill the shape of the container

 Feeling the pressure?

This simulation can be used to investigate the relationship between the pressure, temperature and volume of a gas.

Use the simulation to help answer the following questions:

1. If you keep the volume constant . How does the pressure change when you change the temperature. In your answer describe what happens to the motion of the particles.

2. What can you say about the pressure created if you select the small volume an the maximum temperature.

3. What settings give the lowest pressure? Explain in terms of the motion of the particles.

Specific heat capacity

Use this simulation to measure the specific heat capacity of the three metals available.
